Perthshire, 10 May 2011 at 19:48 hours. After dropping my daughter off for Guides, I have a spare hour and a half. It was a sunny evening with showers so I headed for the fields, parked the car and waited. The field I parked near that I thought was deserted soo revealed at least 7 hares, well camouflaged in amongst the new crop growth. Just before I had to head back to pick my daughter up, three hares came closer and one came so close I couldn't even focus the lens. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/320 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 26 April 2011 at 19:56 hours. Not great light so 1250 ISO speed. Very uncomfortable wait in a camouflaged bag hide. Don't think I'll try that again! Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/250 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 25 April 2011 at 20:02 hours. Two hares briefly glare at each other before going their separate ways. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/200 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 25 April 2011 at 20:00 hours. A brown hare that ran obligingly in front of me, then paused briefly. I was lying low down, getting stung by nettles! Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/320 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 25 April 2011 at 20:00 hours. The big, brown eyes of a hare always seem to be watching you. This one was unaware of my presence though as it stopped in front of me before casually moving off. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/320 sec at f / 5.6.
Glenshee, 18 April 2011 at 11:05 hours. I had crept up on this hare for about half an hour. Then it heard me, moved closer and peered in my direction. It still didn't identify me as a potential threat and did not move far away. I let it be and backed off, content that I had photographed it without really disturbing it. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Glenshee, 18 April 2011 at 10:47 hours. I had almost given up photographing the mountain hares on the Glenshee hills - they were extremely timid - until I spotted this one. It allowed me to get closer on 1st approach (others simply bolted within 200 yards) and then a long and patient 2nd approach on my tummy allowed me within 20 yards. A worthwhile trip after all! Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Glenshee, 18 April 2011 at 08:43 hours. I was standing static for a short while watching a mountain hare when this grouse wheeled about over me and landed nearby. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 17 April 2011 at 19:55 hours. A lovely evening and a quick hour out watching hares paid off. I discovered a new place to hide and a good low, viewpoint. I shall return! Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 17 April 2011 at 19:54 hours. I used a different way of ensuring a decent exposure when photographing this hare; on manual at 1/350th second and f5.6 with automatic ISO. I thought that shutter speed would ensure a sharp image. The ISO required here was 800 - a bit on the high side hence the grain in the image. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 16 April 2011 at 19:05 hours. I hadn't been brown hare watching for a while and it was nice to capture this image after about an hour of waiting. Totally oblivious to the car I was sitting in. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Crieff, 23 March 2011 at 16:15 hours. I had walked up the Crieff hills the week before and it had been knee deep in snow in some places. The following week, it had virtually all disappeared so the mountain hares stood out starkly. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/500 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 25 September 2010 at 17:04 hours. This mountain hare was fantastic to photograph. He/she was unaware of my presence as I crept ever closer. The wind was in my face and sun was low over my shoulder. He carried on with his normal activities - napping, washing, eating as I took a number of photographs. Thankyou hare! Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/750 sec at f / 5.6.
Perthshire, 25 September 2010 at 16:46 hours. This mountain hare had just napped for a short while and was now stretching. It proceeded to feed on the vegetation around. Also, interestingly, it appeared to try scraping some of the lichen off the rocks with its teeth. I'm not sure how much nourishment it got from this. Camera details: EF300mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x, 1/350 sec at f / 5.6.
Perth, 04 September 2010 at 13:29 hours. I love these small owls. The last time I saw one was on Skomer Island. This one was photographed at a raptor display at the Scottish Natural Heritage Photographic Fair in Perth. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/180 sec at f / 4.5.
