I am a 40-something Welshman who has lived and worked in Perthshire, Scotland since 1998. I have used an SLR camera on and off since I was about 18, but only in the last three or four years have I started using one seriously.
My passion at the moment is the hills. Inspired by the book ‘Scottish Mountains’ by the landscape photographer Joe Cornish, I love the challenge of the Scottish weather and rugged landscape. Being on or close to the summit before dawn is the approach I often take to ensure I get the magical light that only comes from a very low sun. However, as anyone who has ventured onto the mountains, the light you hope to get is rarely the light you get! Clouds come from nowhere, winds blow in that are four times stronger than when you started the walk and cloaking mists can end any prospect of photography. You just never know what you are going to get, and that is part of the fascination for me.
In this age of digital photography, photographic web sites abound and finding something a little bit different is quite a challenge. My work is still evolving. I’m not entirely sure where my niche lies, but getting unusual light conditions in the Scottish hills is my challenge at the moment. Who knows where I will go from here!
