NEW WORK
| July - September 2010
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 10:10 hours. Later in the morning as I was descending Meall Garbh, the tops started to clear. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/90 sec at f / 5.6
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 09:50 hours. Some low cloud sweeps over Loch Tay far below. Taken from Meall Garbh, near Ben Lawers. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/500 sec at f / 6.7
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 09:37 hours. The swirling mists added an aura of mystery to this secluded glen, north of An Stuc. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/350 sec at f / 6.7
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 09:22 hours. The southern slopes of Ben Lawers and its neighbours belong to a large nature reserve, owned by the National Trust. It has a rich variety of alpine plants growing there. This is taken on the shoulder between An Stuc and Meall Garbh. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/4 sec at f / 19
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 08:56 hours. A brief break in the low cloud that was blowing in from the north allowed just enough time for me to take this image of the very top of Ben Lawers from the slopes of An Stuc, its Munro neighbour. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/180 sec at f / 6.7
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 07:56 hours. The area near lochan nan cat, at the north-west foot of Ben Lawers was very boggy and my socks were already wet from treading on sphagnum moss and numerous puddles. Cotton grass is a good indication that the area is boggy as indicated here. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/3 sec at f / 19
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 07:42 hours. A small pool of water, flanked by various grasses, produced a nice reflection of the rocky mound called Creag an Fhithich. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1.0 sec at f / 22
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 07:12 hours. A mist covered Ben Lawers not long after dawn. Ben Lawers is the highest peak in Perthshire and at 1214m, it is the 10th highest in Scotland. I only had the morning so did not climb it, choosing instead to go up An Stuc and Meall Garbh. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/125 sec at f / 6.7
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 06:57 hours. The slopes of Meall Garbh light up in the early morning sunlight. The small burn leaves lochan nan cat and eventually empties into Loch Tay. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 4.0 sec at f / 22
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 06:53 hours. A brief glimpse of sun just after sunrise. Low cloud started to blow in over the hill tops too. The small loch is Lochan nan cat. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 4.0 sec at f / 22
West Perthshire, 26 August 2010 at 06:15 hours. I managed to make the walk-in from the A827 just in time for a brief sunrise at lochan nan cat. Nestling north-west from the huge bulk of Ben Lawers, I presumed it would be calm at this time of the morning but a fresh breeze was blowing off the hills. Use of my polarising filter and the early light meant an 8 second exposure that blurred the ripples, producing a similar effect to a calm surface. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 8.0 sec at f / 22
Southern Cairngorms, 22 August 2010 at 11:41 hours. In the wetter parts of the valley floor were patches of bog asphodel flowers. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/10 sec at f / 16
Southern Cairngorms, 22 August 2010 at 11:09 hours. The slopes of Ben Macdui and Carn a' Mhaim on the left. The distinctive Devils Point is on the right. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/15 sec at f / 16
Southern Cairngorms, 22 August 2010 at 07:57 hours. Looking across the Lairig Ghru from Cairn Toul to the partly obscured peak of Cairn Gorm in the distance. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/10 sec at f / 19
Southern Cairngorms, 22 August 2010 at 07:26 hours. I made a very early start from the tent in the Lairig Ghru at 5.00am. Sticking my head out of the tent straight into a cloud of midge so thick I thought it was raining. Awful! In my haste to get away from them, I forgot my wide angle lens so had to make a 10 minute detour back to the tent. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/6 sec at f / 19
Southern Cairngorms, 22 August 2010 at 06:35 hours. First of all, this photograph has been manipulated - I did see and photograph a golden eagle the day before but I only had my 70-200mm and 17-40mm lenses with me so the eagle looks rather small. The mountain is Devil's Point at sunrise. I tried a simple bit of photo-manipulation to try to show off the eagle in its majestic surroundings. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/125 sec at f / 4.5
Southern Cairngorms, 21 August 2010 at 19:12 hours. The huge bulk on the other side of the Lairig Ghru is Ben Macdui, at 4295 feet, it is the second highest mountain in Britain. Taken from the top of Devil's Point. Camera details: EF17-40mm f/4L USM, 1/3 sec at f / 22
Southern Cairngorms, 21 August 2010 at 19:05 hours. The famous pass, about 40km long, that runs close to some of the highest mountains in Britain. The path follows the infant river Dee for much of the way as it runs down towards Braemar. This photograph was taken from the summit of the Devil's Point about an hour or so before sunset. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/10 sec at f / 16
Southern Cairngorms, 21 August 2010 at 17:02 hours. The tiny Corrour bothy (bottom right) is dwarfed by Cairn Toul (4th highest mountain in Britain). The bothy was busy so I camped nearby before walking up to Cairn Toul, Angel's Peak and Braeriach the next day. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/125 sec at f / 6.7
Southern Cairngorms, 21 August 2010 at 16:51 hours. The path that runs through the pass called the Lairig Ghru is seen in the foreground here, with the huge Cairn Toul flanking it on the left. Braeriach is in the background. Camera details: EF70-200mm f/4L USM, 1/180 sec at f / 9.5
